If you’re staying in Puerto de Mogán and fancy a different kind of day out on the sea, this dolphin and whale watching catamaran trip from Puerto Rico* is one of the most popular excursions in the south of Gran Canaria. Its one of the most popular Dolphin Trips in Gran Canaria
I’m planning to do this excursion myself and wanted to share a proper overview of what to expect, because many visitors ask about boat trips where you actually have a good chance of seeing dolphins in the wild.
The trip starts from Puerto Rico, which is around 20 minutes by bus or taxi from Puerto de Mogán.. From the bus station in Puerto Rico it’s an easy walk down to the harbour.
Once onboard the catamaran, the crew heads out into the Atlantic Ocean in search of dolphins, pilot whales and sometimes even minke whales. Of course, these are wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed, but this area is known for having very good chances throughout the year.
One thing I like about this trip is that it’s not only about searching for marine life. You also get beautiful views of the Gran Canaria coastline from the sea, which many people never experience during their holiday.
There are viewing areas on deck, but also glass panels below deck where you can watch the ocean beneath the boat. During the trip the catamaran usually stops in a small bay for around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how long the wildlife search takes.
At the swimming stop you can swim in the ocean, snorkel using the masks provided, or try the onboard slide into the sea. If you prefer a quieter experience, you can simply stay onboard with a soft drink and enjoy the scenery and sunshine.
Soft drinks and water are included during the swimming stop, although food and alcoholic drinks are not included.
The full excursion lasts around 3.5 hours and includes the return transfer back to your accommodation area if you book the transport option.
A few practical things worth knowing:
The excursion is not recommended for pregnant women
Not suitable for wheelchair users
If you are very prone to seasickness, this may not be the best excursion on rougher sea days
What I personally like about this type of trip is that it combines sightseeing, sea views, wildlife and swimming without feeling too rushed. It’s also quite a nice way to see another side of the island away from the beaches and hotels.
