Another beautiful morning is beginning in Puerto de Mogán, with blue skies and a comfortable overnight temperature of around 21–22°C.

Today will be sunny and warm, reaching approximately 27–28°C locally. However, temperatures across Gran Canaria will begin rising from Wednesday, when a yellow warning for high temperatures comes into force.

Some inland, southern and western areas of the island could reach 36–37°C.

Puerto de Mogán is fortunate to have a coastal location and often benefits from the trade winds, but it will still feel hot. Please do not assume that travelling into the mountains will necessarily be cooler. During this type of weather, the higher and inland areas can be considerably hotter than the coast.

🚧 The upcoming harbour promenade renovation

Many of you are worried about the planned renovation between the Cofradía de Pescadores and the lighthouse, particularly because the work is expected to begin in September and continue for approximately six months.

The project covers a stretch of around 240 metres and includes:

• New paving

• Pergolas

• Improved lighting

• Benches

• New litter bins

I completely understand why anyone with a holiday booked during this period might feel concerned.

Personally, I would remain calm.

It is a relatively short section at the far end of the harbour, away from many of the places where most visitors spend their time. Compared with some of the other renovation projects we have seen in recent years, I believe this is likely to have less impact on the village as a whole.

I do not understand why the work has been planned for the main visitor season from October to April. The authorities may have practical reasons, but these have not been clearly communicated.

However, the rest of Puerto de Mogán will still be here and operating as normal.

The sky will still be blue.

The bougainvillea will still be blooming.

The drinks will still be cold.

There will still be happy people filling the terraces, enjoying the beach and walking through the old village.

It will still be our happy place. 🌺

💡 A lovely idea for today

Why not explore somewhere different?

Take the ferry to Arguineguín and return by bus, or take the bus there and enjoy the ferry journey back.

Arguineguín has a more local atmosphere than Puerto de Mogán and is lovely for a relaxed morning.

Have lunch, bring your swimsuit and towel, and enjoy a swim before returning.

Another possibility is to walk along the coastal path from Arguineguín towards Anfi del Mar, where you can stop for lunch and swim in the beautiful bay.

A small day of exploring can often become one of the best memories from a holiday.

⚠️ Special heat warning

AEMET has issued a special warning for a prolonged period of intense heat affecting parts of mainland Spain and the Canary Islands.

The episode is expected to continue until at least Sunday 2 August.

In Gran Canaria, temperatures will rise most significantly in the inland areas and across the south and west of the island. Some locations could exceed 37°C, with warm nights and an extremely high wildfire risk.

Mogán Town Hall is asking everyone to take extra care:

💧 Drink water regularly, even before you feel thirsty.

☀️ Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day.

🏠 Stay in cooler places whenever possible.

👵 Pay particular attention to older people, young children and anyone with a chronic medical condition.

🔥 Avoid any activity that could start a fire and follow all instructions issued by the authorities.

Please also remember that pets need shade and plenty of fresh water. Never leave a person or animal inside a parked vehicle, even for a short time.

🏛️ Mogán Town Hall reaches zero financial debt

Mogán Town Hall has announced that it no longer has any financial debt after paying off a loan of more than €15.5 million ahead of schedule.

The loan was taken out in October 2022 to meet financial obligations connected with the expropriations for Plaza Negra and the David Jiménez Silva Sports Complex in Arguineguín.

It was originally due to continue until 2037.

By making three large early repayments, the council completed the repayment approximately eleven years ahead of schedule and estimates that it has avoided around €924,175 in interest costs.

The major repayments were:

• January 2024: €4,498,654.05

• 16 June 2025: €8,878,157.50

• 10 July 2026: €1,240,586.74

The council was also able to repay early without paying a financial penalty.

Councillor for Finance Ernesto Hernández said that the strong economic results achieved over recent years made it possible to cancel the loan in only four years.

Whatever our individual political opinions may be, reducing public debt and avoiding nearly one million euros in future interest is certainly significant news for the municipality.

🌍 Island news: who is spending more?

The latest tourism figures show that the Canary Islands continue to play a major role in Spain’s visitor economy.

Between January and May, the Canary Islands accounted for 20.5% of all international tourist spending in Spain, ahead of Catalonia and Madrid.

The most detailed recent figures for Gran Canaria show tourism revenue of just over €2 billion during the first quarter of 2026, an increase of 6.17% compared with the same period last year.

Visitor numbers increased by only around 1%, suggesting that the growth came mainly from visitors spending more rather than from a large increase in arrivals.

Average daily spending reached €183.93, while average spending per visitor for the entire holiday reached approximately €1,620.75.

German visitors recorded particularly strong growth, increasing their total spending by more than 23%.

The Nordic countries remained the largest market in total spending, contributing approximately €560 million.

Average spending per British visitor, however, fell by almost 8%, despite the British market remaining one of the most important for Spain and the Canary Islands.

Spanish visitors recorded the largest increase in average daily spending, rising by more than 22%.

The figures point towards a gradual change in the tourism model, with greater emphasis on the value generated by each visitor rather than simply attracting ever-increasing numbers.

The statistics use different methods and cover different time periods, so they cannot all be compared directly, but the overall trend is interesting.

Local winds around Playa de Mogán are expected to remain fairly light and should not cause any significant problems during the day.

Conditions at Gran Canaria Airport will be windier, with northerly winds and a possibility of stronger gusts later.

Nothing in the current local forecast should prevent you from enjoying a normal day in Puerto de Mogán.

The UV level is expected to reach 11 or higher around the middle of the day.

That is classified as extreme.

Please do not judge the strength of the sun by how hot your skin feels. A light breeze can make the temperature seem pleasant while the UV radiation remains extremely strong.

Reflection from the sea, swimming pools, pale paving and sand can also increase exposure.

✔ Seek shade around midday

Sunburn can happen surprisingly quickly under these conditions.

The sea temperature is approximately 24°C, with generally slight sea conditions and waves of around 0.5–0.8 metres outside the protected beach area.

It should be a lovely day for swimming.

Always follow the beach flags and any instructions from the lifeguards.

Please also remember that the water around Playa Chica can sometimes have stronger currents than it appears from the shore.

The latest reading from the nearby Arguineguín monitoring station shows moderate air quality, mainly due to fine particles known as PM2.5.

Most people should be able to continue their day normally.

Those who are particularly sensitive, including anyone with asthma or respiratory conditions, may wish to take extra care if they notice any discomfort.

✈️ Gran Canaria Airport update

The latest airport observation shows visibility of 10 kilometres or more, with broken cloud at around 2,500 feet and a temperature of approximately 22°C.

Current winds are from the north at around 14 knots.

The forecast indicates generally good flying conditions, although there is a 30% possibility of stronger winds between approximately 13:00 and 22:00, with gusts potentially reaching 33 knots.

This does not automatically mean delays. It simply means conditions may become noticeably windier around the airport later today.

A reminder for travellers:

💡 Families arriving from the UK with children under 12 should use the staffed passport-control desks rather than the electronic gates.

💡 When departing for the UK, passport control is after airport security in Area D.
