Opened in December 2004, Presenting: Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa was designed to feel completely different from the typical large resort hotels found in many holiday destinations. Instead of building one large block, the architects created what feels like a traditional Canarian village, with small winding pathways, wooden balconies, courtyards, tropical gardens and separate low-rise buildings spread across the property.
The architectural design was created by Kaferrer Asociados, with interior design by Marta Tabar, while the atmospheric evening lighting throughout the gardens and public areas was designed by Rafael Gavira and Emilio Pellejero. Even today, more than 20 years later, the hotel still feels timeless rather than dated.
The entire complex covers around 48,000 square metres and includes nine separate accommodation buildings surrounded by one of the most impressive botanical gardens in southern Gran Canaria, with more than 450 species of plants, palm trees, flowers and cacti. Many guests say the gardens are one of the main reasons they return year after year.
The hotel is located in Puerto de Mogán, around a 10-minute walk from the beach, harbour and marina area. The atmosphere is calm, elegant and relaxed, which is one of the reasons it has become especially popular with British guests aged between 55 and 75 looking for winter sun, comfort and a quieter style of holiday.
During the winter season, particularly from November to March, the hotel tends to attract more couples, mature travellers and long-stay guests escaping colder weather in northern Europe. Many are repeat visitors who have been returning for years and appreciate the peaceful surroundings, quality food and high standards of cleanliness and service.
During school holidays and the warmer summer months, there are usually more families staying at the hotel. Even then, however, the atmosphere generally remains calm compared with many larger family-focused resorts elsewhere on the island.
The hotel has 487 rooms, including double rooms, junior suites and suites, all with private balconies or terraces. There are two heated swimming pools, including one quieter pool area designed more for relaxation and another more active area with daytime activities.
One of the hotel’s biggest highlights is the Inagua Spa & Wellness Centre. Alongside treatments and massages, visitors can book the very popular spa circuit, which includes hydrotherapy pools, saunas and relaxation areas. One of the loveliest parts is the more secluded garden setting around the spa area, which feels peaceful and private. In the quieter months it is often much easier to book, and it makes a really lovely low-season treat or relaxing afternoon.
The spa is also open to non-residents, so you do not need to stay at the hotel to enjoy it.
Another nice detail many visitors do not realise is that parts of the hotel are accessible to the public. The elegant Bandama Lobby Bar, located near reception, is open to non-residents and is a lovely place for an early evening drink, coffee or cocktail in comfortable surroundings. It is especially nice if you want a quieter atmosphere away from the marina front.
The hotel is also home to Los Guayres, one of Gran Canaria’s Michelin-starred restaurants, led by chef Alexis Álvarez. For guests staying on half-board, the Tamarona buffet restaurant is particularly well regarded, especially for breakfast and the quality and variety of the evening meals.
Another interesting feature hidden within the grounds is the small archaeological site known as Las Crucecitas, reflecting the island’s long history before tourism arrived.
Over the years, Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa has become one of the most recognised and respected hotels in Puerto de Mogán, particularly among travellers looking for quality, comfort, beautiful surroundings and a more peaceful atmosphere rather than nightlife and busy entertainment resorts.
