There is still plenty of daylight for an evening walk around the harbour after the main heat has passed.

🌬️ WIND

Local wind conditions in Puerto de Mogán should remain considerably gentler than at Gran Canaria Airport and along more exposed parts of the island.

The south-west coast is partly protected by the surrounding mountains and valleys, which often means that official island-wide wind warnings feel very different here.

Around Puerto de Mogán, forecasts indicate mainly light local winds during the day, although occasional stronger gusts may be felt in open or elevated areas.

At Gran Canaria Airport, the northerly wind remains much stronger, with current reports showing approximately 21 knots and stronger gusts possible during the day.

This does not mean Puerto de Mogán will experience the same conditions. The airport lies on a far more exposed part of the island.

⚠️ UV INDEX

The UV level is expected to become extremely high, reaching approximately 11 around early afternoon.

The strongest period is likely to be between approximately 12:00 and 16:00.

Playa de Mogán is much more sheltered than the open coast, so conditions on the beach are often calmer than the offshore forecast suggests.

Playa Chica

Playa Chica is the small, more natural beach behind the colourful Mogán sign.

To reach it, continue past the sign and use the steps beside the rocks.

It is a beautiful place with often very clear water, but it is more exposed and can have stronger currents than the main beach.

Small children should never be left unattended near either beach or the harbour edge.

⚫ Black or beach-closure notice: swimming is strictly prohibited

A yellow flag does not necessarily mean the water is dirty. It may indicate currents, swell, marine life or another temporary safety concern.

🌬️ AIR QUALITY

Air quality in the Mogán area is currently shown as moderate.

The forecast indicates fine-particle levels rising slightly through the middle of the day.

Most people should be able to continue normal outdoor activities without difficulty.

Those with asthma, respiratory illness or particular sensitivity to dust may prefer to reduce prolonged strenuous activity if they notice symptoms.

Keep medication available and drink sufficient water, especially in the heat.

✈️ GRAN CANARIA AIRPORT UPDATE

Conditions at Gran Canaria Airport are currently suitable for normal flight operations.

The latest airport information shows:

• Good visibility of 10 kilometres or more

• Scattered cloud at approximately 2,500 feet

• Temperature around 23°C

• Strong northerly wind of approximately 21 knots

• Stronger gusts possible during parts of the day

The airport forecast remains within normal visual-flight conditions, but wind can occasionally affect approach, departure or ground handling.

Passengers should always check directly with their airline before travelling.

For UK and other non-Schengen travellers

Passport control for departing passengers is located after security in Area D.

Families travelling with children under 12 normally need to use the staffed manual passport-control lanes rather than the automated gates.

Queues may build during busy departure periods, so do not leave passport control until the final moment.

🚌 TRANSPORT FROM PUERTO DE MOGÁN

Puerto de Mogán is compact and easy to explore on foot, but several convenient options connect it with the rest of the south coast.

Bus 91

Bus 91 is one of the most useful routes for visitors.

It connects Puerto de Mogán with places including:

• Playa del Cura

• Tauro

• Amadores

• Puerto Rico

• Anfi del Mar

• Arguineguín

• Gran Canaria Airport

• Las Palmas

Tickets can generally be purchased on the bus by card or cash.

Local stop tip

For many hotels and apartments around the resort area, Lomo Quiebre may be more convenient than travelling all the way to the final bus station.

It is the second stop after the tunnels near Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Puerto Mogán.

Ferry

The ferry is one of the most enjoyable ways to travel along the south-west coast.

Services normally connect Puerto de Mogán with:

Tickets are normally available when boarding or from the operator’s ticket point.

🗞️ LOCAL NEWS FROM MOGÁN

Mogán proposes a working group to address the situation in Veneguera

Mayor Onalia Bueno has proposed establishing a working group involving residents of Veneguera, environmental and heritage organisations, the relevant public administrations and Costa Canaria de Veneguera.

The stated aim is to provide greater transparency and clarify the work being undertaken by the company, which is connected to the Lopesan Group, in the Veneguera ravine and beach area.

During a meeting with the Asociación Cultural Medioambiental El Cardonal de Veneguera, the mayor explained that the Town Hall does not have unlimited discretion to approve or reject these projects.

Applications must be assessed using reports and authorisations issued by higher-level authorities, including the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.

According to the Town Hall, it previously issued as many as six unfavourable decisions after receiving contradictory findings from different Cabildo departments.

While the Island Water Council authorised certain work, the Cabildo’s Environmental Service reportedly issued unfavourable findings concerning the same projects.

The Town Hall says it asked the president of the Cabildo to establish a unified position but did not receive a response.

Costa Canaria de Veneguera subsequently brought several legal proceedings. Both the Contentious-Administrative Court and the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands ruled in favour of the company in a number of cases, requiring the Town Hall to grant the relevant planning licences.

The mayor has also stressed the importance of distinguishing between work covered by administrative authorisation and any activity that may have exceeded the permitted limits.

Any work outside the granted permissions would need to be investigated by the competent authorities, which would also be responsible for sanctions and restoration measures where appropriate.

The Town Hall states that:

🏖️ Public access to Veneguera Beach remains guaranteed.

🌿 Urban development cannot take place within the Veneguera ravine because it forms part of the Nublo Rural Park.

This remains a sensitive local issue, and the proposed working group may provide a clearer forum for residents, campaigners, public bodies and the company to examine the facts together.

📖 LOCAL AUTHOR PRESENTS NEW POETRY COLLECTION

The Plaza Doctor Pedro Betancor León in Playa de Mogán hosted the presentation of Guillermo Bueno Marrero’s new poetry collection, En el fragor de la batalla, on Friday, 24 July.

The event formed part of the Fiesta del Carmen programme.

Mogán’s Councillor for Culture and Festivities, Mencey Santana, attended alongside writer Pepa Aurora and Diego González, who guided a personal conversation with the author.

The collection draws on experiences, emotions and lessons from the past decade.

Guillermo Bueno explained that the work grew from a desire to communicate real experiences, not only the beautiful moments but also those that force people to confront their own internal struggles.

A central theme of the book is that a person’s greatest battle is often with themselves, with the thoughts that either encourage or restrain them.

The event concluded with a signing session attended by local residents, visitors and representatives of the municipal government.

Guillermo Bueno Marrero is from Mogán and works as a producer, screenwriter and author.

His previous work includes Pedro Orugo y el Valle de la Esperanza, which inspired the international series Las Aventuras de Carlos Orugo.

🎭 MOGÁN OCCUPATIONAL CENTRE TAKES TO THE STAGE

The Mogán Occupational Centre participated on Friday in the 27th Gran Canaria Choreography and Theatre Gathering for centres supporting people with disabilities.

The event was held at Teatro Víctor Jara in Vecindario and organised by Asociación COMPSI together with the Santa Lucía de Tirajana Town Council.

The purpose of the gathering is to encourage participation in cultural and social activities as an important part of inclusion and personal development.

This year’s theme was the 1960s.

The Mogán participants performed a colourful and lively dance inspired by the decade, wearing period-style costumes and dancing to music from the era.

The performance was prepared with their teacher, José Hernández, and received warm applause from the audience.

⚓ FIESTA DEL CARMEN: THE FIRST DAYS

The opening days of the Fiesta del Carmen in Playa de Mogán have brought together neighbours, families and visitors for a varied programme of traditional activities.

Weather pre-alerts lifted

The Government of the Canary Islands has ended the pre-alert for maximum temperatures and the separate marine-pollution pre-alert after conditions improved.

However, yellow warnings for strong wind remain active in some more exposed parts of Gran Canaria.

Conditions can vary considerably across the island, so travellers heading into the mountains, towards the east coast or to more exposed coastal areas should check local forecasts before setting out. Puerto de Mogan is sheltered for this wind direction.

Fire brought under control

Emergency teams have stabilised the fire reported in the south-east of the island.

The situation has improved, although official instructions should continue to be followed in affected areas.

Medical diversion at Gran Canaria Airport

An Iberia flight travelling towards Brazil reportedly made an emergency landing at Gran Canaria Airport after a passenger suffered an acute attack of pancreatitis.

Emergency diversions of this type are made so that the passenger can receive appropriate medical care as quickly as possible.

Management of feral goats

The regional environmental authority has opened the application period for authorised capture of feral goats using traditional controlled methods in protected areas.

The measure forms part of efforts to protect vulnerable island vegetation and habitats.

🐚 SOMETHING FOR CHILDREN: CRABS AMONG THE ROCKS

Some of Puerto de Mogán’s most interesting residents are very small and easy to miss.

Look carefully around the volcanic rocks near the harbour wall and breakwater and you may see flashes of colour moving quickly across the dark stone.

These are Sally Lightfoot crabs.

Young crabs are usually darker, helping them blend into the rocks. As they mature, their shells may develop shades of red, orange, purple and brown.

They move extremely quickly and often disappear into narrow cracks as soon as anyone approaches.

The best way to see them is to sit quietly and wait.

After a few moments, they often begin to emerge again.

Please watch without trying to catch or disturb them.

🐟 WATCHING THE FISH

The water around the harbour and bridges is often clear enough to see schools of fish moving below the surface.

The first blue bridge near the beach and parts of the harbour edge can be good places for children to stop and look.

Please remember that harbour edges can be slippery and do not always have full barriers.

Young children should remain within arm’s reach of an adult at all times.

🌺 WHY PEOPLE RETURN TO PUERTO DE MOGÁN

Something curious happens to many visitors to Puerto de Mogán.

They return.

Not once, but often many times.

Some come back every winter. Others return year after year, sometimes staying a little longer with each visit. Over time, what began as a holiday gradually becomes part of the rhythm of their lives.

Part of the reason is easy to explain.

The climate on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria is among the most reliable in Europe, and Puerto de Mogán benefits from a particularly gentle microclimate.

For people arriving from northern Europe, especially during winter, that alone is a powerful attraction.

But the deeper reason people return is harder to measure.

It is the atmosphere.

Puerto de Mogán does not try to overwhelm visitors with enormous attractions or constant entertainment. Instead, it offers something that has become increasingly difficult to find: a place where it is genuinely easy to slow down.

The harbour is beautiful without feeling too grand.

The streets are lively without becoming chaotic.

The evenings are pleasant without turning into an endless party.

For travellers who have spent years visiting larger, busier resorts, that balance can feel deeply refreshing.

Puerto de Mogán is also a place that reveals itself slowly.

A first visit may focus almost entirely on the harbour, the beach and a few meals beside the marina.

On a second visit, people begin to look beyond the obvious.

They notice the valley, the hillside village, the quieter paths and the viewpoints. They begin taking the ferry rather than only watching it leave. They discover more of the island.

Later visits often become more personal.

People find the café they return to each morning, the restaurant where they know exactly what they will order and the route they like to walk before breakfast.

They learn where to find shade at midday and where the evening light looks most beautiful.

They know when the harbour is quiet, when the beach becomes busy and when the village begins to settle again.

This is how a destination starts to feel familiar.

And familiarity in Puerto de Mogán does not usually become dull.

It becomes comforting.

Visitors recognise the rhythm of the day, the angle of the sun and the sound of the harbour in the morning.

The place stops feeling merely attractive and begins to feel known.

For many people, that is what brings them back.

Puerto de Mogán also suits a stage of life in which beauty and enjoyment no longer need to come with pressure.

It offers activity without strain, sociability without excess and comfort without demanding formality.

Nothing insists that you rush, perform, keep up or stay out late.

A day can be filled very easily, but it does not have to be filled aggressively.

A swim, a gentle walk, lunch by the harbour, perhaps a ferry journey, a little shopping or simply an hour sitting in the shade can still feel like a complete day.

That ease is more valuable than it may first appear.

Some destinations are thrilling once and exhausting afterwards.

Puerto de Mogán often works the other way around.

It becomes more appealing with repetition.

The first visit shows you the setting.

Later visits give you a feeling of belonging, even when that belonging lasts only for one or two weeks each year.

Eventually, people stop saying they are travelling to Puerto de Mogán.

They say they are going back.

And perhaps that is the clearest sign of all.

Puerto de Mogán does not simply attract visitors.

For many, it quietly becomes part of the shape of their year and their home from home.
