If you ask me for just one place in Puerto de Mogán that I think everybody should experience at least once, my answer is very easy: El Mirador - My Number One Must-See in Puerto de Mogán

El Mirador - (The Viewpoint)
Not the beach.
Not the harbour restaurants.
Not even the marina at sunset.
El Mirador.
Because from up there, you see Puerto de Mogán differently.
You see the old fishing village, the coastline, the Atlantic Ocean and the entire shape of this marina , the beach. All that became one of the most loved places in Gran Canaria.
And strangely enough, many visitors never go there.
Where does the walk start?
The walk begins just past the blue bridge near the taxi rank in Puerto de Mogán.
Continue along Avenida del Castillete and after around 100 metres you will find the stairs beginning beside the post office. (Correo)
At first it may not look very special.
Follow the red and white signs - 257 steps.
But keep going slowly.
This is not a race. It is one of those places where you should stop often, turn around and look behind you.
The higher you go, the more beautiful it becomes.
Don’t worry if you are not super fit
One important thing I want to say:
Many people look at hills or stairs and immediately think:
“I couldn’t do that.”
But honestly, most people can.
You do not need to be athletic. You simply need to go slowly. There are two places to stop on the way and enjoy the views but very little shadow.
Bring water.
Wear sensible shoes.
Avoid the hottest part of the day.
That is all.
I especially recommend:
- early morning
- late afternoon
- sunset
And mornings up there are magical.
El Mirador is one of the very first places in Puerto de Mogán where the sunlight arrives. While parts of the village are still waking up in shadow, the mountain and the viewpoint begin glowing in soft golden light.
It feels peaceful in a way that is becoming rare nowadays.
Bring breakfast with you 🌺
This may sound simple, but it is honestly one of my favourite suggestions.
Bring a little breakfast.
A sandwich.
A bocadillo.
Coffee in a cup.
Fruit.
Maybe something sweet from the bakery at Spar.
Sit quietly at the top and just enjoy the silence.
Most likely, you will have the place almost completely to yourself, especially in the morning.
No loud music.
No crowds.
Just the sound of the wind, distant waves and the occasional bird.
The story hidden on the way up
One thing many people miss is that the walk itself tells the story of old Puerto de Mogán.
Along the route you pass several plaques and information boards explaining:
- the history of Los Riscos
- the original fishing village
- cave houses built into the mountain
- local Canarian plants
- the old pebble beach before tourism changed the coastline
Older fishermen still remembered Puerto de Mogán as a simple pebble beach where boats rested on the shore after fishing.
Long before hotels and marinas existed, families here survived through fishing, small cave homes and watching the Atlantic for shoals of tuna and bonito.
One of the plaques explains how a salting factory established in 1911 helped create economic growth through traditional artisanal fishing.
Another explains the desert climate and local plants like tabaiba, cardón and the Canary Island palm.
And there is also a tribute to Juan Hernández Moreno, remembered as a visionary connected deeply to Mogán and its people.
The signs are weathered now, but together they tell an important story:
Puerto de Mogán did not begin as a tourist resort.
It began as a working fishing community built between mountain, ravine and sea.
And then you reach the top…
And finally comes the reward.
The final viewpoint.
A breathtaking 180-degree panoramic view over Puerto de Mogán, the harbour, the beach, the marina, the valley and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.
This is the moment where most people suddenly become very quiet.
You understand the geography of Puerto de Mogán.
You see how the village sits protected inside the valley.
You see the colours differently.
You understand why people fall in love with this place and keep returning year after year.
Honestly, if you only do this walk once during your stay, it will probably become one of the memories you keep the longest 🌺
