🚖 AIRPORT WARNING – ILLEGAL TRANSFERS IN GRAN CANARIA 🚖

Authorities are now stepping up controls at Gran Canaria Airport after another case of illegal passenger transport was discovered this weekend.

According to La Provincia (17th May 2026), Canary Islands Police intercepted a driver who was allegedly picking up passengers without the required official transport licence.

The driver reportedly used the public airport parking area to avoid detection by inspectors and police while collecting tourists arriving at the airport.

The passengers were informed about the situation and were later redirected to an authorised legal taxi to continue their journey.

⚠️ Why this matters for visitors

Many tourists book “cheap private transfers” online, through Facebook groups, WhatsApp or unofficial drivers offering airport pickups.

But in Spain this is illegal without the correct transport authorisation and insurance.

The minimum fine for the driver is between €1500 a €4,000 with immediate vehicle seizure

What many visitors do not realise is this:

👉 Passengers themselves can also receive fines for knowingly using illegal transport services. Fine between €300-600. More importantly, riding in an unregistered, illegal vehicle voids passenger insurance in the event of an accident

In some cases these fines can reach several hundred euros depending on the circumstances and whether authorities believe the service was knowingly arranged outside the legal system.

🌺 My personal advice:

✔️ Use authorised taxis

✔️ Official transfer companies

✔️ Hotel-arranged transport

✔️ Registered excursion companies

The authorities here are clearly increasing inspections now, particularly around Gran Canaria Airport.

đź’ˇ A useful thing to know:

Legal authorised airport transport vehicles in Gran Canaria normally display the official blue VTC transport sign or taxi identification required by Spanish transport authorities.

If somebody approaches you inside or outside the airport offering “cheap transfers” without clear company branding, official identification or pre-booked documentation, be careful.

Authorised taxis also use the official taxi rank directly outside arrivals - you do not need to walk with someone to a random parking area.

When in doubt, always ask to see official transport identification before getting into the vehicle 🌺
