ℹ️ Airport Information ✈️

✈️ While sitting here waiting for a flight arriving from Norway, I started thinking about Gran Canaria Airport and realised there are probably a few things many visitors don’t know about it.

📍 Gran Canaria Airport (LPA)

Did you know?

✈️ Gran Canaria Airport first became a national airport in 1930 and has been welcoming passengers for almost 100 years.

✈️ The airport code is LPA, which comes from Las Palmas.

✈️ It is the busiest airport in the Canary Islands and handled around 15.8 million passengers in 2025.

✈️ More than half of all passengers travel for holidays, making tourism the airport’s biggest business.

✈️ The airport operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

✈️ Thanks to Gran Canaria’s stable climate, weather-related airport closures are extremely rare compared with many airports in northern Europe.

✈️ Gran Canaria Airport is one of Europe’s most important gateways to West Africa, with links to destinations such as Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Cape Verde.

✈️ Every day thousands of passengers arrive dreaming of sunshine, while thousands more leave wishing they had booked another week.

✈️ The first thing many visitors see after landing is the dramatic volcanic coastline and the Atlantic Ocean stretching out beneath the aircraft.

✈️ For many of us, Gran Canaria Airport isn’t just an airport - it’s where holidays begin, reunions happen, and memories are made.

🌴 How many times have you landed at Gran Canaria Airport?

And where was your very first flight?

I landed first time in 1982 - and my first flight was to Turin airport in 1977.
